Spend a semester in another state—or on another continent—and gain real-world teaching experience. Whether you're at IU Bloomington or another campus, we can help you get started on your student teaching journey.

The rigid structure of most teacher education programs makes it difficult to take part in a traditional study-abroad or off-campus internships. Our award-winning program provides students invaluable intercultural immersion experiences while also fulfilling their student teaching requirements.

Is Global Gateway Right for You?

Each Global Gateway program is a challenging, yet rewarding experience for participants. Students generally spend at least eight weeks away from Bloomington or their home campus, work a full day in school, engage with the local community, and adapt quickly to different cultures. Participation requires at least a year long commitment, beginning with a preparatory phase that includes monthly classes, readings, and a workshop, culminating in the student teaching experience.

Students who are most likely to succeed in cultural immersion experiences have these qualities:

  • Resilience and willingness to adapt to unfamiliar circumstances
  • Readiness to seek an independent experience away from home.
  • Ability to financially plan for trip, by budgeting and/or pursuing scholarship options at respective institutions.
  • Strong professional and personal objectives for their experience.
