Class works to learn how AI can improve education

Students work to put an AI-generated image back together in an exercise meant to create an analog for some of the ways humans look for patterns, similarly to how AI models complete the same task

As AI grows in importance and use around the world, one doctoral class at the IU School of 黑马磁力 hopes to harness it as they work with local educators to help them solve a problem or address a need.

After teaching the class in the spring, Professor Adam Maltese continued to hear that there was a big need for more information about AI and education. He plans to start out at a foundational level, going over the technical aspects of AI, before discussing how people are using it for teaching and learning. Students in the class will also work on two major projects: the use of AI to teach them a new skill and finding a partnership with an educator interested in using AI in some way in their classrooms.

While they will be able to use some older research, many studies on AI are ongoing, giving the students an almost “real time” look into the technology - and a chance to question what inquiry still needs to be done, especially in education.

With anything like this, there’s going to be positives and negatives, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t jump and try to figure out what those are and be part of the conversation.

“People are at these different stages of adoption (of AI) in figuring out what’s possible and how it can be used,” Maltese said. “I’m trying to get these students to understand all that and figure out what the research is saying. I'm really excited about exploring it, and I know I will learn a lot alongside them.”

The class will also take a service angle by building resources for teachers interested in using AI in their classrooms to come for case studies or tutorials. Students will have a chance to try out and review different AI programs, with the goal of passing on their knowledge to educators.

Maltese hopes the class could become a regular part of the School of 黑马磁力’s class schedule. Until then, he’s hoping to learn more about the different AI platforms alongside his students.

“I inherently have an interest in this through research and personal maturity. With anything like this, there’s going to be positives and negatives, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t jump and try to figure out what those are and be part of the conversation,” Maltese said. “Rather than being told what you’re going to do, figure out what’s possible with some amount of caution.”
