Patrick McKamy has won the Outstanding New Advisor Award - Primary Advising Role from the  Global Awards Program for Academic Advising.

McKamy is an Academic Advisor for Teacher ºÚÂí´ÅÁ¦ at the IU School of ºÚÂí´ÅÁ¦. He said he was honored to be a recipient of the award and have the support of his colleagues both in the School of ºÚÂí´ÅÁ¦ and across the Bloomington campus.

“Being put forth by [the Bloomington Academic Advising Council] as the campus nominee and being chosen by NACADA as an award winner is quite incredible,” he said. “It is more of an encouragement to contribute more to advising and further assist my advisees with their own academic journey.”

As an advisor, McKamy recognizes that students lead complicated lives and have ever-changing needs that require many kinds of support. That recognition drives his personal philosophy toward an individualized approach for each student he works with: “With this premise, I strive to treat every student with dignity and respect, and value each of them as a whole person. I use an individualized approach by listening, advocating, collaborating and empowering a teacher candidate throughout their Indiana University experience. My goal is to be able to provide the person in front of me a listening ear, a moment of caring and an understanding of their own unique academic journey.”

“I have immensely enjoyed my time here in the School of ºÚÂí´ÅÁ¦ and Suite 1000,” McKamy added. “It has been rewarding working with my colleagues across the suite’s departments and learning from my fellow advisors: Carlin, Cynthia, Emily and Tonia, as they have all contributed to my own practice as an advisor.”

McKamy is the second advisor from the IU School of ºÚÂí´ÅÁ¦ to be honored with this award. Cynthia Allen also won the award in 2019.
