Student Spotlight: SoE Students Volunteer Teaching in Batam Island, Indonesia |
From May 13 to June 2, 2025, undergraduate teacher candidates Madison Copsey, Ryan Grellman, Jillian Hearne, Sanae Murphy, and Serendipity Said travelled to Batam Island, Indonesia, for a short-term volunteer teaching program. They were accompanied by Associate Professor Daniel Castner. The program is available every year for all interested pre-service teachers.
The experience began with a visit to the Canadian International School in Singapore, where the group observed IB (International Baccalaureate) instruction accompanied by Glenda Ray, IU SoE Alum and teacher at the school. In Batam, they spent two weeks at Sekolah Misi Bagi Bangsa, the school where they spent two weeks teaching conversational English to students from kindergarten through 10th grade and collaborating with local educators. The program provided invaluable opportunities for the students to strengthen their teaching skills, experience diverse classroom settings, and gain a deeper understanding of education in an international context. | | | |
